"Danc[ing] Barefoot to Gypsy Tunes"

"In recent years more and more architects have used an extended architectural narrative to screen out the visual noise of the contemporary city, and in the process prepare visitors mentally for the act of viewing art. But it may also further reduce the impact of Gardner’s original vision. The ability to move, in a few short steps, from the darkness of the brick vaulted lobby to the joyous explosion of light that fills the towering pink courtyard is not just a great architectural effect; it is a powerful metaphor for what art can do — and what it did for her. Mr. Piano has given us a thoughtful, mature, even beautiful, building. And there is no question in my mind that it is necessary. Still, some of us will mourn the loss of that experience."

I'm not sure why people are calling his review of the Isabella Stewart Gardner's expansion controversial.... are you?

I rather liked it.
