I have a rule about jewelry. No I'll amend that. About design. I gravitate toward extremes when I purchase a garment or accessory, as I find that a compromise always falls short of expectations. (And I have great expectations, despite my keen desire to play Miss Havisham in our in-class performances during eighth-grade English. Who would want to play any of the other characters when you could be Miss Havisham, the petty spinster who burns to death? An Oscar-worthy performance...guaranteed. But I digress.)
For example, living in the country appeals to me, as does living in the city. Living in suburbs, which is comprised of a weird, unsuccessful mix of both? Bad.
A tailored skirt that is simple and sophisticated appeals to me, but I find an incredibly feminine, ruffle-covered skirt has its charms too. A semi-tailored skirt with one or two ruffles is usually very, very boring.
Highly intricate jewelry with lots of filigree, enamel, and precious gems can be a successful focal point for any outfit, as can austere, bold pieces with heavy lines and large chucks of malachite and metal. A slightly dainty, craft fair find with large stones and delicate metal wire? Bad.
So, when I see a piece of jewelry or a garment that I find so ugly and yet so fascinating, I will more than likely purchase it, wear it, and receive lots of compliments about it. Because, the trick is this: pairing opposites together. If you wear interesting pieces that are incongruous, the outfit is a delightful mix of contrasting elements which creates an overall harmonious effect.
And this is why I love eBay's selection of clothing and accessories: the variety presents incredible possibilities.
