By accident, apparently.
Last fall, I created an arrangement of (invasive) Asian Bittersweet and pumpkins on our patio:

The squirrels started to eat them:

I left the pumpkins there for a while, to let the squirrels, birds, and chipmunks salvage what they could before discarding them in late November.
This spring, I discovered this:
The result of some buried seeds. I had forgotten how exciting it is to watch a vegetable grow! Like raising a child -- a delicious, nutritious, and always grateful child.
Now, my little unexpected treasure has become this:
Almost ready to be featured this fall. I am a very proud adoptive parent!
