Well, I guess I'll put that cover letter in the trash!
After agonizing over every word in my carefully-crafted cover letter (Every. Little. Word.), I decided that it was finally time to apply for the Assistant Buyer position at the Talbots' office in Hingham, MA. Well, I started the process, added all my work experience, clicked NEXT, and suddenly I was done. No space to add a cover letter.... Are cover letters a thing of the past?
It's funny, because when I'm really interested in a position, I write a cover letter. I spend those hours making sure I appear intelligent, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable about the company. If I'm less interested, then I apply, but only submit my CV. So what to do? I wrote it, so I'm going to post it here:
It
saddens me to learn of Talbots’ financial situation. Since I was young, I’ve always equated the
Talbots brand with quality and effortless elegance – oriental rugs, gin and
tonics, and the most gracious hostesses. Now, as I enter my late twenties, I
have begun to rely on Talbots for clothing tailored to my curves and my
lifestyle – clothing that transitions easily from a conference room to a
concert to a night with friends. It saddens me to think that the modern
classics I purchase at Talbots some day may not be available to me, my mother,
and my friends and family members. I would like to participate in Talbots’ future successes by making intelligent, well-researched purchasing decisions as
an assistant buyer.
As an
assistant buyer, I’d like to learn more about the modern women who inspire Talbots’
collections – their travel destinations, their favorite genres of music and art,
and who influences them. I’d like to learn how these women see themselves and
who these women want to become. Through its collections, Talbots has the
opportunity to empower, inspire, and influence its target market, and I’d like
the opportunity to present a collection that enhances the life of the Talbots
woman. Modern classics – this is what Talbots sells best, and what I’d like to
see it sell for generations to come.
I have
spent the last few years away from fashion design but would like to return to
the world that inspires me. After graduating from the London College of
Fashion, I worked for a variety of companies in a variety of roles, whatever
was available during the recent recession. I am currently working in the Analytics
department of [COMPANY], where I’ve enjoyed using my communication, analytical,
and team-building skills while evaluating [RESPONSIBILITY]
across the United States. While I enjoy
aspects of my current job, I would like to work in a more creative environment,
an environment that provides new challenges and allows me to contribute to a
field I enjoy.
I’ve
included my curriculum vitae and would love to answer any questions you might have about my
background or qualifications. More importantly, I would love the opportunity to
interview and share the various ways I would be able to contribute to the success
of this influential brand.
