I arrived in Brooklyn this weekend, and while I won't share my tale of woe, I will say that moving here was one of the most stressful things I have ever done. Maybe it's because I tried to move on a budget. Maybe it's because U-Haul doesn't mean U-Can-Park. Maybe it's because when the landlady hides a key, it doesn't mean that you'll be able to find it. And maybe it's because even though the landlady has a mobile, it doesn't mean that she will answer it.
But I am rejoicing in the small things. I am slowly getting settled. I am organizing, decorating and starting to apply for more challenging, higher-paying jobs. Let's hope I find the perfect fit.
Here are some photos from the move and a few teasers of the new place:
Most of my furniture is from the basement or from my yard sale adventures. My mom has quite an eye for roadside gems, and she allowed me to look through her collection and select a few things. I'm also bringing my own roadside jewel, a chair I refinished, and a room-sized mirror I purchased for a song. I purchased most of the fabric a few years ago when the beloved Fabric Place went out of business, but I also found a few beautiful remnants in the basement of Zimman's, a local favorite that has survived the recession. Bottom line: I am having a wonderful time.
The new place is slowly coming together:
Baleen, London souvenirs, and vintage toys? That pretty much explains my life:
Vintage mail bag. "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of
night...."
(This can be applied to the New York City postal workers. I can now use it liberally. How
exciting!)
I'm not explaining these. Well, lest you think I'm strange, I'll explain the desiccated turtle: My dad found it this spring. It's an baby Indian Painted Turtle. His family lives in my old backyard. I like it. So there.
More to come.
