Cat Hats, Crocuses and Yellow and Black

My latest post for On Pins and Needles took me back to the 1910s.
Whenever I visit, I wish I could stay there!

I found two plates that were not a great fit for a Christmas post, but I felt were worth sharing:

I love everything about this illustration. Georges Barbier created this early spring scene with
manicured shrubs and sculptural crocuses, strange foreboding clouds, and the chicest of outfits. I love the coat, the stripes, the shoes, and most of all, the cat hat, complete with whiskers.
Someone, please buy me a cat hat!

This dramatic interior, illustrated by Paul ras, reminds me of the moment I learned that yellow and black were often paired in interiors throughout England in the 1930s. Such a bold combination! I instantly wanted to use these colors to create an energizing but inviting space. This illustration from 1913 shows a sophisticated balance of black and white and blue and yellow. The blue and white are a welcome addition to the palette; I am more than pleased with the results.
